At the height of Nigeria's COVID-19 emergency, we installed pedal-operated hand washing stations at banks, malls, hospitals and community hubs.
During the height of Nigeria's COVID-19 response, hand hygiene infrastructure was scarce in many high-traffic public spaces. We installed 75+ pedal-operated hand washing stations across banks, markets, hospitals and community centres in Abuja.
The pedal-operated design reduced the need to touch shared surfaces, lowering transmission risk while encouraging consistent hand hygiene among thousands of daily users.
This initiative was delivered alongside public health messaging to reinforce safe practices well beyond the installation itself.
To maximize the impact of the intervention, Everight Healthcare Foundation combined the installation of hand washing stations with community health education on proper hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and other infection prevention measures. Volunteers and healthcare advocates engaged members of the public, demonstrating correct handwashing techniques and reinforcing the importance of regular hygiene in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
The initiative reflected the Foundation's commitment to strengthening community resilience during public health emergencies by providing practical, sustainable solutions where they were needed most. Through collaboration with local institutions and community stakeholders, the hand washing stations became an accessible resource for thousands of daily users while promoting lasting behavioural change and a culture of preventive health long after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
